How to remain motivated and consistent in weight loss/gain journey
How to remain motivated and consistent in weight loss journey? Staying motivated and being consistent is the biggest differentiator between winners and losers. And that’s true for any endeavor in life; be it climbing Mount Everest by Arunima Sinha, writing symphonies by deaf and blind Beethoven, inventing airplane by Wright Brothers in 18 years or building finest body by Arnold…! Its hard to be consistent in anything you start, even brushing your teeth for the second time, if you are not habituated, consistently is very difficult.
Let’s investigate into how cycle of motivation – consistency – Result works. We need to ask ourselves honestly that why we are not consistent in exercise or diet or sleeping habit. Of course, we have some reasons which stops us. May be kids, office work, household responsibilities, busy schedule, work deadlines etc. These are valid reasons based on individual’s circumstances and life.
But then, why some people transform their life? We find solace in the fact that they don’t have such challenging circumstances. God or life or their boss or their kids or spouse or in laws are fair to them. We have an inherent belief that our circumstances, challenges are 1) the reasons we are not able to perform 2) because of people around us 3) situation is not in our control. All these belief gives rise to complain, persistent blame and helplessness. This complaining, blaming mind gets tired and not strong enough to be consistent. Also since we feel these circumstances are not in our control, we stop putting effort and start living with those reasons, in our comfort zone. Mind works in a cycle of Motivation – Consistency – Result. This feeling of complain/blame/helplessness/disempowerment disturbs the cycle and makes us inconsistent. Lack of consistency reduces results and we start losing motivation. It’s a concentric circle and ends with disempowered living.
Lets look at things in a radically powerful perspective. Things happen and happens for all. We really don’t know why sun rises but it rises for everybody since last billions of years, why rain comes and why seasons change. Not all events are in our control. Even there is no point in bothering why a particular human being behaves in a particular way. Nature has its own way..! But we have a very powerful tool which decides the results and outcome in our life. And that is how we ‘RESPOND’. Our response is the only controllable thing in our life which has the power of altering the outcomes in our life; EVENT + RESPONE = OUTCOME. That is say outcomes are a combination of events and response. Once we shift our response outcomes, that is to say ‘circumstances’ also start changing in our life.
As soon as we adopt this way of life, which is more harmonious to the way nature is operating, blame starts vanishing. Rather creativity in our response starts emerging and things start aligning. For example I remember one instance from my life. One fine morning when I woke up in morning it was raining heavily. I usually used to go for walks at that time. I responded by changing my mind for cycling in rains as walking in rain was risky due to snakes etc. But then again cycle tyre was flat. Again I responded by climbing my 18 floor stairs 4 times. I responded so outcome was also different. I could have gone into blame mode but then outcome would have been different. So it's clear how important and powerful our response is. We are more consistent with a peaceful responsible mind. But irony is we are not at all using the power of response by even 5%. This is a power only human species have. A tree can grow only till nature has set its limit, no animal has power of response. They react like a machine. When we blame and react we feel helpless because remote of our life goes into hands of others. When we respond sensibly, outcome starts altering as we want and boosts our belief, confidence and consistency. So lets respond not react…!
